The Kitchen Furniture Guide to Dining Table and Chairs

Your dining room, along with your kitchen, will be a gathering place for your family and friends. Since it will be a focal point in your home, it deserves the best quality furniture that you can afford. Your dining table and chairs will be used multiple times a day, day in and day out, for many years. In order to withstand this much use, it needs to be well constructed. Your goal in choosing your new furniture should be to find a dining table set that not only matches the overall look and feel of your home, but is also built to last for years. And you want all of this at the lowest possible price.

When you first start your shopping, you may feel overwhelmed with all of the different options available. Do you want a wood table? How about one with a metal top, or glass? Wooden chairs, metal and vinyl, or upholstered? Do you want a formal dining table & chairs or would a country look fit better at your house? You may start the process with some clear ideas about what you want or you may refine your choices as you go. Even if you think you know exactly what you want from the start, don’t automatically rule out everything that doesn’t fit your criteria, or you may end up overlooking something that, while it is not what you were originally looking for, turns out to be perfect for you.

Don’t rush the initial phase of shopping for new kitchen furniture. When you are in a hurry and just want to get it over with, you are more likely to buy something that you’ll regret down the road. This will be a big investment that, hopefully, will last years, if not decades. Take your time, discover all the new ideas that have come along since the last time you shopped for a table and chairs.

Before you leave home, you should measure your dining room or the area where the dining table and chairs will sit. At a minimum, you should write these numbers down. Even better would be to sketch out a rough drawing showing the dimensions of your room, plus the placement of the doors and windows and any other furniture that is already in the room. Once you are in a huge furniture showroom, it will be hard to judge exactly how the set you are considering will fit into your home. The last thing you want to do is to get it home and discover that you only have room for the table and 1 chair. You will need enough room behind each chair to pull it out and maneuver your body into it.  You’ll also want to have enough room to walk all the way around the table when there are people sitting in the chairs.

Take your time, sit in the chairs and imagine yourself eating a meal at the table. Are the chairs a comfortable height for you? A 6 foot tall person and a 5 foot tall person have different requirements for their dining room table and chairs. Do you like arms on your chairs, or do they get in your way? Some chairs have casters so that they move in and out easily. Sit in several different types before you make a purchase; you’ll be glad you did in the long run.

Your family situation will also have some bearing on your final choice. Toddlers have a tendency to bump into the corners of square or rectangular tables. Round or oval might be a better choice for young families. The same could be said about glass top dining tables. They look beautiful when they are clean and shiny. Not so much when they are covered in fingerprints and dried mashed potatoes.

Consider the furnishings in the rest of your house, too, while you are shopping for your kitchen and dining room. If you have a modern home filled with black leather and chrome furniture, you’ll want to pass on by the large wooden farmhouse dining table and ladder back chairs. If all of your other furniture is dark maple, a light oak dining table and chairs are not going to fit in. If your dining area is totally separate so that the two types of furniture are never seen at the same time, this is not as important as it is if you have a open floor plan.

Today, you cannot ignore the internet as a place to shop for kitchen furniture. Unless you live in a very large city, your choices are going to be quite limited locally. But you should still start by going to a furniture showroom so you can sit in a few different types of chairs and look at several options for tables. Once you get better idea of what you want and begin narrowing your choices down, come back to the internet and start shopping for the best prices. Just don’t forget to check the delivery schedules and prices before you make a final decision, shipping charges can bring the price up considerably.
